Life of a normal teen before my cancer diagnosis

Regan, based in the US, is a happy and healthy young leukemia survivor.

Before my cancer diagnosis, I was a normal teenager. A teenager that was very active in my school where I played softball, volleyball, and served as captain of my cheerleading squad. I was living my best life, always busy with my friends, school, and my family! Loving every minute of my life, with no worries! I was known in my small town as the outgoing happy girl who never met a stranger! That all changed my senior year on December 4, 2016.

Life of a normal teen before my cancer diagnosis

My best friend that lived with me and my family passed away tragically in a car accident. She was my other half! We shared everything together! Emotionally, I was in a very dark place, and battled depression for a few months. I never wanted to get out of bed to do anything with my friends or family. I just wanted to sleep where I wouldn’t have to face life without my best friend. My mama was so worried about me. The daughter she knew and loved wasn’t inside me anymore! With the love and support of my friends and family I started slowly pulling myself out of the dark depression I was battling, and I started allowing myself to try and find a little happiness again. I started focusing on graduation and being able to start a new chapter in my life. A fresh start to find myself again!

Just brushed it off

It was now May and Graduation was finally here! About 2 weeks after graduation A couple of friends and myself went to Nashville Tennessee to visit the parents of my best friend that had just passed away. It felt good to all be together! While there we attended a music fest. I started having TERRIBLE pains in my knees and I had no energy. I told my mom about the pains & just brushed it off because I honestly didn’t know what it was.

After I came home I KNEW I needed to go to the doctor. So my mom made me an appointment with our family doctor in my home town… After several test and blood work…I was given a possible diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. My body and mind went numb….
